In 1973 the Brighton Branch of the YMCA held a course of ten lectures on “Knowing Antiques”. Participants in the course were keen to continue meeting and further their knowledge, so the Brighton Antique Club was formed. Its inaugural meeting was held on 18th August 1973.
Thanks to the expertise and enthusiasm of the guest speakers over the years, members have increased their knowledge on a wide range of topics which has led to very successful purchases at auctions, retail shops, op shops & garage sales. A new appreciation of family heirlooms tucked in cupboards has been fostered.
Through the years traditions have been established and the Club’s birthday and pre-Christmas meetings are marked with special lunches and morning teas.
Apart from meetings, the Club has organised special tours to places of historical significance and a variety of galleries.
The Club’s AGM is held in February with the election of Office Bearers and a committee who are charged with running the Club for the year ahead. The Club is indebted to past and present Office Bearers and their committees who have piloted the Club through 50 successful years.
